A New Rink
I can't make any good ice time at my usual rink on Tuesdays due to school, so I tried out a rink that's much closer to the campus. I stopped by the new rink on my way home from class to catch an early afternoon public. This rink is mainly a hockey rink. A figure skating club comes in to give a few lessons Saturday morning, and that's the extent of the figure skating there.
There were a few hockey players having basic skills lessons, and a few figure skaters who came and left fairly quickly, but overall the session was pretty quiet. I worked some things from senior moves and some things from my program. My ankle was bothering me again, and I didn't want to do anything too stressful. Maybe all of the cold weather is making it stiff??
The thing that impressed me about this rink was the way the hockey skaters were taking their time to do edge drills and improve their actual skating. The two hockey coaches present were both really good. In fact, they were better at teaching edges and xovers than many coaches I've seen coaching LTS in figure skating programs.
I won't be able to use this rink for heavy duty practice with run throughs of moves and programs, but it was a nice place to skate. I may become a regular on Tuesdays after class. It's kind of nice to have a day to putz around and not have to work on anything all too serious. Plus, the lightly attended 3 hour public at this rink costs the same as an hour of crowded freestyle at my usual rink.
