Somewhat Off Jumping Probation
I'm almost off jumping probation. I still didn't do axels or double toes today because they hurt more than other jumps. I did do singles jumps and double sals though! I'm very relieved to see that the double sals are staying fairly consistent even with some very sporadic skating over the last two weeks. Maybe the technique has improved to the point that I can start to trust this jump... (knocking on wood just in case)
I did take on HARD fall on a double sal today though. I have a split jump into the double sal in the program. I've been landing on the L toe, stepping onto RFI, doing a LFO 3turn, and doing a power 3 into double sal. Well, Coach K thought that doing a RFI mohawk into power three and leaving out the LFO 3turn would quicken things up and look better. I'll give her that the footwork was quicker and smoother, but I let my shoulders swing on the take-off for the salchow and bashed my left hip and right hand pretty well. That will NOT be going in the program!
We eventually settled on split jump, land L toe, step to RFI 3turn, step to LFO 3turn, power 3 into double sal. That worked well. It flows better than what I'd been doing, but the two forward 3turns give me a moment to collect myself before the double sal.
I was really happy that I landed double sals after such a bad fall. Even a month ago, a fall like that would have scared me, and I'd have lost the jump for at least a month. I'm so glad that Coach K has put so much time into fixing my jumping technique - I'm finally starting to see improvement after 8 years of inconsistency!
Today's other tidbits:
-Flying camel with change of edge is close, but still a bit shakey. Coach K wanted me to try an 8 rev flying camel into COE upright spin instead. Wonder of wonders, I can suddenly do an 8 rev flying camel in the program like it's no big deal! I have no idea where that came from, but I'll take it. It actually works out really well because we had some extra music there anyway. If the COE on the back camel smooths out, I can still add it. If not, it's still a level two spin...
-Worked out the footwork out of the flying camel and into the flip jump. I'll end the spin on a FI edge backspin, push out into 2 xovers, do a LFO mohawk, cross the L foot in front, and do a flip. That puts me right at the end of the rink to start my footwork which is nice because when I start that far up, the flip-loop-loop combo out of the footwork doesn't get squashed against the wall.
-Fell on my COE spiral in my program. It was cold, I was stiff, there were people in my general area, and I tried to make the edges too deep. Blah! I fixed the problem later by keeping my upper body up instead of dropping it as I change edge. I'll have to put some extra time into this. There's no way I want to give up all of the points for my spiral sequence and get a deduction for a fall.
-I could not do a layback today. This is one of my worst spins, but Coach K insists on keeping it in the program. I don't know why... Again, it needs work.

Thanks! I haven't really learned any new skills this past year, so I was feeling kind of down about my progress. I guess I have to look at overall improvements in skating skills and consistency. Then, I have made pretty darn good progress!
