Nice Compliment
Today, I coached for a party group. These party groups can be really challenging because I never know how many kids and what ability levels I'll get. Plus, they are scheduled in a small coned off area during public skate, so I have to yell over blaring music and screaming teenagers. I'm not loud by nature, so it's always a real test for my vocal cords.
Today's party group was one of the best I've worked with. The kids were all about the same age, and the group's coordinator told the kids that they didn't have to take the lesson if they'd rather skate around on the public session. That left me with about 10 kids that all really wanted to learn to skate. We did marching and falling, two foot glides, backward wiggles, forward and backward swizzles, one foot glides, snowplow stops, an obstacle course, and red light/green light. The kids were terrific, and tried really hard at each skill. They listened well and were an absolute pleasure to work with.
As I was removing the cones after the lesson, the group's coordinator came over to tell me that I was the best instructor they've ever had, and they've been doing this for eight years! That made my day :)

Good work! Nice when the effort is noticed, isn't it?

It was terrific. I'd been feeling kind of down about coaching because I had some really big classes last term with kids who wouldn't listen. Now, I'm completely refreshed and a bit sad that I couldn't sign up to teach more group classes next term. (Darn school schedule got in the way of teaching on weeknights.)
