Spinny
I managed to pull off the coolest spin ever today! I borrowed the ideas from the grand prix event I watched last weekend. Several skaters did a combination of camel, FO edge camel, cannonball sit, back-sit, BI edge sit, pull up (Y) spin. Then, I saw one girl do a FO edge camel with a bit of a layover in the upper body. Soooo goregous... So, I put it all together. The layover on the FO edge camel actually made it faster, and the transition into the cannonball sit was even easier. I didn't do a great job on the BI edge sit, but I wanted to make sure that I had the speed to finish with the Y spin. This is definitely going in my program. With a couple months of practice, I think I can have this looking as good as the ladies on the grand prix circuit!
I also had a lesson with one of my rink's up and coming coaches today since Coach K has been out of town all week. We worked on some axel exercises to warm-up. My favorite was waltz threes (with an "h") into waltz jump into axel. It had a very nice rhythm and flow when I did it right. I'm definitely going to keep working these. We also did another walk through exercise of step over, traveling double 3turn, waltz, traveling double 3turn, axel. I stunk the place up on this one, but found it really useful in controlling my landings and staying on the circle.
Then we moved onto double loops. I actually did some good loop machine drills. Usually I stink at these. It's set up like a loop jump, but instead of jumping I pull up into an "h" position and snap down into traveling 3turns. I managed to stay over my right side, and with some encouragement, I started snapping a bit harder and faster. I popped my first few double loop attempts, but once I put the double loop right after the loop machine drill, they felt much better. I had to fight to keep looking to the right to stay over my right side, but it really helped the jump. The last double loop attempt was only 1/4 turn cheated, which is the cleanest one I've landed in several months!
I left the ice feeling really good about my skating today.
