I Love It When Coach K Fixes Me!

I had a lesson with Coach K on Friday. Thank goodness! She straightened out my axel and made me do double sals and double toes. All were landed successfully by the end of the session! Even the problematic spread eagle into axel was landed. It's amazing that when I keep my shoulders square on take-off, I rotate straight in the air.

I also had a jumping epiphany. When I'm doing a combo with a loop on the end, I need to keep the free leg down between jumps. I had been trying to keep the free leg lifted in an "h" position between jumps, and that was allowing the free leg to get swingy. When I keep the free leg down, between jumps, I have much better control and flow. Plus, I can generate more lift into the second jump by pulling my leg up into the "h" position as I take-off.

We also decided that the jump after my flying camel will be a lutz instead of a flip. Actually, Coach K decided, and I wasn't allowed to argue. I'm consistently coming off of a flat, so Coach K doesn't think I'll get a wrong edge deduction. I'm going to work really hard on keeping that outside edge though because I don't want to leave anything to chance.

As for spins, the combo spin was really, really good on Friday. I'm still not sure what I'll do with the flying camel - both the 8 rev spin and the COE spin are a little weak. I think I'm really making progress on the COE though. Laybacks were better than I expected after a month of neglect, although nowhere near my best.

Senior moves are coming along. I really like the sustained edge and the spirals. Double 3's to quick rockers are not my strong suit and are going to need a lot of work. I managed to make some progress though. At least now I can make it through a whole pattern without muscle memory taking over and doing part of the junior power pulls to quick rockers. Quickstep is also better. I'm sure Coach K will want to refine it, but I can usually make it through all of the correct steps. Placement might still need some work though...

Since Mids are only about a month away, senior moves are going on the back burner for awhile. Coach K wants me to run through one or two patterns as warm-up and spend the rest of my lesson time on the freeskate. I'm not getting a lot of ice time right now because of my school schedule, so that's probably about all of the moves I'll be doing.

Coach K has promised intense program training starting on Monday, and quite frankly, that scares me!
