Un-waxeling my axel and double lutz!
Today's lesson was spent mostly on my axel. I was able to do it from the FI mohawk entry just fine. Then, it was on to the change of edge entry. Apparently, I was making the pattern too small, and I wasn't sitting on the BO preparation edge properly. So, we spend probably 15min working the entrance. I'm pleased to report that my axel is doing just fine now. I'm going to keep working from the change of edge entry. I just need to practice it and gain confidence so that I don't look timid. I actually really like the BO edge that I end up on, just the change of edge needs to be quicker/stronger.
After fixing my axel, Coach K told me that we were going to work on double flips and double lutzes (yikes!). I told her that my single lutz has been kinda bad lately, so we started with that. I've been feeling like I'm way too heavy on the toe pick, but I haven't been able to fix it. Coach K told me to think of stretching the picking leg back, jumping up, and then picking. I was slamming my pick down before I had even reached back with the picking leg. Also, I have to bend my skating knee instead of dropping my hip when I pick. I did some beautiful lutzes with these corrections. They had a soft entrance, good height, and good run out. Then, Coach K wanted to see lutz-loop. I did one that was only ok by my standards. It hardly had any flow out, but Coach K liked it because I stayed over my R (landing) side. Then she asked me to try a double. I just about had a panic attack right there. This jump is my nemesis. But, I'm not one to back down from a challenge. The first try was sad. I stuck my toe pick in, and nothing happened. I just stepped back onto my other foot. Not very impressive. The second try, I lifted, rotated, and fell. The third try, I landed one! By that time session was over. I was glad because I doubted that I could repeat the feat. Coach K was surprised that I wasn't more excited. I told her that I'd be excited once I was done having a panic attack. I freakin' hate lutzes. Although, if they stay nice and light like today, I might have to reconsider.
