Training for AN

I managed to get the stomach flu over spring break, followed by a mild head cold. But, I didn't let that stop me from skating. I have a competition to prepare for!

Coach K has announced that she is not planning on returning to coaching anytime soon, so I've been working with another coach, Coach T. She makes up really good analogies about wrapping myself up like a burrito and squeezing my legs like I have to go to the bathroom really badly when I jump. She's also a stickler for double run throughs of my freeskate. I've managed to survive them so far, but it's an odd feeling, skating all out when you can't breathe or feel your legs...

Jump-wise, I am horribly inconsistent as usual. I've developed two really bad habits since just before Nationals: wrapping and popping. I used to wrap my jumps on occasion, but now, I can feel my right knee squeezing against my left calf on the landing of almost all of my double jumps. (I should be squeezing at the ankles.) And, I keep popping jumps. I really don't know why. The good news is that I still manage to land a few respectable doubles on every session, so I haven't done irreparable damage to them.

I'm going to upgrade the single toe - single toe combination from Mids to a double toe - single toe at Nationals. The double toe isn't very consistent out of the program, and I have yet to land it in the program. It may sound crazy to put such an inconsistent jump in a competitive program, but it's time that I suck it up and do it. If I have any hope of moving up to the master's level (a possibility for next year) or of passing my senior freeskate (my ultimate skating goal), I have to get better at putting double jumps in my programs.

I also upgraded the combo spin with a cannon ball position on the front sit, and a change of edge on the back sit. The flying camel has also been changed into a back camel - sit - COE upright spin. The back camel, I've been calling my slow motion spin. At first, it was very hit or miss, but it was very well behaved on today's practice. Now, I just need to speed it up a bit so that I'm not late into my footwork.

The only other change in the program is that I edited a bit of choreography (took out the quick turns) before my spiral sequence. Now that I'm doing the cannon ball sit, I'm literally nauseous and have trouble seeing clearly during that bit of footwork. That didn't bode well for the quick turn. So, it's been changed to a push/pose into back xovers. That also gives me more speed into the spirals.

Now the program is set, and I've got just over a week to practice the heck out of it.
