Pre-Juv. Freeskate Video

I finally got to see the video of my pre-juv. freeskate. I was a bit disappointed. I have droopy fingers in a few places, I skate slow, and my spiral wasn't very good.

I was doing a change of edge spiral (FO-FI), and I didn't do a very good job of locking the knee on the free leg and keeping my back up. I nailed the change of edge though. I'll need to work on spirals. I can do them almost split on the floor, but I don't get nearly that high of a free leg on the ice. Can't for the life of me figure out why.

I also need to suck it up and take the power class. I felt like I was really pushing through most of my program, but I looked soooo slow on the video. (I know video makes you look slower, but still...) Unfortunately, the power class for the summer session is Friday morning, and I won't make it to work on time afterward. I'm considering asking my boss if I can work 1/2 days on Friday and take a payroll deduct since I work at a college and there's hardly anyone here in the summer, especially on Fridays. I'm not sure if that's allowed though. It might be better for me to wait for the fall power class anyway because the summer is split into more sections, and I'd be in Elite with all of the ninja skaters (FS7 or novice mitf and up). In the fall, the High power class is FS5 or juvenile mitf and up. The ninja skaters still take the fall class, but at least I wouldn't be the slowest one there. I'm pretty sure I'd get killed in Elite. Although, that would give me motivation to move my butt.

Oh, my other observation from the video is that I need to lose weight. A lot of weight. I looked HUGE. And, although I've started running (training for a marathon next year), I gained two pounds last week. I guess I really need to watch my diet. I swear that I am literally addicted to sugar though. And, living at home where my mom keeps a constant supply of junk food in the house for my younger brother doesn't make things any easier. I guess I need to find some will power.

when i asked my coach about increasing amplitude on my pathetic spirals, he said back strength! all the flexibility in the world doesn't do didly if you don't have the strength to hold the leg up there. pilates, etc.

and you may not have like how you looked on your video, but you passed, which means you didn't look worse than your average pre-juv skater.

Hmmm, back strength. Yup, that could be a problem for me. Bad backs run in the family, and I hurt mine when I was younger by falling off a horse and landing back first on a jump. When I practice spirals on the floor I usually hold onto something for balance; I try not to, but maybe I'm getting the extra height by pushing on whatever I'm holding onto instead of using the proper muscles. I'll have to focus on using the proper muscles. Getting spirals higher is HARD!

The good news is, if bad backs run in your family, then strengthening your back muscles is likely to help you stay pain-free. Losing weight will probably help too.

My back does tend to feel better when I do lots of Yoga(stretching) and Pilates(core strength). I'll have to make sure to include those in my training more often. There just aren't enough hours in the day!
