Men's Olympic Rant

I was soooooo disappointed. I stayed up late to watch the men's long, and I wish I had gone to bed after Lysachek/Savoie. They had the best performances of the night by far. They both had beautifully choreographed programs and executed them well.

I was disappointed with the rest of the field. The men with the good programs all had execution problems (Takahashi, Weir, Buttle, Sandhu) and then you had Plushenko who executed well, but as far as I'm concerned, had the two worst programs out of those shown on tv. Plushenko's programs were so poorly choreographed (from an aesthetic viewpoint - not a 'how many points will this get me' viewpoint) that it's like his choreographer took a big steaming poo on the ice and called it a program. The jumps were completely front-loaded and there was little to no choreo inbetween them. Then, the footwork/spins/few easy jumps were all smashed together with some frantic arm movements thrown in, and the judges call it artistry. And, I don't know why his footwork is so highly rated. He runs/jumps on his toepicks and flaps his arms. Granted he does it with speed, but a lot of the steps aren't that difficult. Where are the rockers/counters/choctaws/brackets/deep edges/flow/one foot turns that make footwork hard? How can judges justify giving him 8's or 9's for his PCS scores. His transitions, choreo, and interpretation PCS scores should have been well below skaters like Lysacek, Savoie, Buttle, Sandhu who scored in the 7's.

I really don't have a problem with Plushenko. He did execute very well. He deserved the 8's for skating skills and exection, and there's no argument that he won the technical score by a mile. My problem is that a big turd of a program like that scores higher in PCS than any other skater's program. The fact that the new judging system rewards poor programs like Plushenko's makes me want to vomit on my skates.

Sadly, this new judging system is also making its way into adult skating. It will be used at 2007 Adult Nationals. I don't care if I place dead last, but I will not compromise a beautiful program for the sake of earning points. Hopefully, the NJS will work better in adult skating than in the Olympics.
