2006 Goal #1 Accomplished

I found a new coach!

That was much easier than I expected. I e-mailed the director of the dumpy rink (as they have a far better program for competitive and advanced skaters), and she recommended someone who turned out to be absolutely great!

I had a trial lesson today. I was planning on trying a few other coaches, but after my lesson, I know that I won't find anyone better. So, Coach K will be my new coach. She got me to land 2loop and 2flip today. She also got me to stop flutzing (just singles today though). And, I learned the last novice move - the BI to FI 3's around the corners. All in a 1/2 hr lesson. It's amazing what you can do when you get your hips in alignment with the rest of your body! (Something my last coach had apparently missed - although I still love him and thank him for all he taught me.)

I told Coach K that my goals for this year were to pass pre-juv and juv freestyle, and if possible, novice moves. I also told her that I wanted to compete at AN 2007, and she's all for it. She has another student who will probably compete in the master's category that year (she's off on maternity leave this year). I'm thrilled to find a coach who has some experience with adult competitions.

Today's Lesson Detail:

Loop: Remember to roll off of the toe on take-off; let myself jump out a bit as well as up so the jump can get some distance

2Loop: The R shoulder should be held back, but not so much that I'm twisting it; let the arms come through and up as I lift off of the toe; Get up first, then rotate

2Flip: Bend the skating knee after 3turn instead of dropping the hip to get to the ice; let the arms come up and through, then rotate

Lutz: Keep the hips square/level on the entire entrance(I was lifting my R hip to get onto the outside edge which forced me to flutz b/c I had to drop my hip in order to pick - the dropped hip=inside edge on take-off.); wait just a bit longer before take-off so the skating foot will pull in toward the picking foot; delay shoulder rotation just a second compared to other jumps

BI-FI 3's: When pushing into the FI 3, step out of the circle a bit; be more aggressive in the weight transfer to set up the end pattern; on the hard direction, make sure the hip/foot come through before stepping forward for the inside 3

That was it for today, but from now on, lessons are 6am every Tuesday.

And, Coach K charges less than my old coach and I don't have to pay her non-staff ice fees on top of her coaching fees. What a bargain! Maybe I'll find room for another lesson...
