Yesterday's Lesson Notes & Today's Practice

Yesterday's Lesson Notes

I think I'll call this Super Spins Lesson. Not because any of the spins I did were super, but because once I learn to do them correctly they will be super - maybe even Sasha Cohen like.

Change Edge Back Camel/Change Edge Flying Camel: I can get the 3turn feeling from BO to FI edge, but I can't hold the FI edge to save my life. These are going to need lots of work. The good news is that my flying camels weren't too bad. Most of them actually jumped off of the toepick from the FO edge which is a big improvement from completing a 3turn on take-off and jumping off a BI edge. I even had a few that landed with speed :)

Catch Foot Back Camel: This is my non-stretchy side, so this is hard. I can grab my free foot, but I can't stretch it up very far. Coach says I need to lean forward more as I pull my foot up.

Catch Foot Forward Camel: This is my stretchy side! Coach had me do forward camel-catch foot-layback (while still holding my foot). I surprised myself by actually doing it on the first try. I think this looks better with an attitude than a layback though.

Flying Sit: This was my first time working on this spin on a private lesson. Years ago, I toyed with them in group lessons, but I never had any real instruction. I have the same bad habit on this spin as I do on my flying camel. I complete a 3turn on take-off instead of rolling the FO edge off of the toepick. When I take-off correctly, I can land something that vaguely resembles a flying sit. Although, at present, it's more of a teeny tiny hop than a flying leap into the sit. Coach's big tip on this spin - the take-off should feel something like the take-off for the flying camel. I'm not sure why, but once he told me that, my attempts were instantly better.

2loop: Coach wanted to spend the last few minutes on jumps and picked 2loop. These were beautiful on Tue, so I was excited to show coach. Well, they were a disaster for my lesson. I landed only one very cheated one. I fell on every other attempt. I just couldn't get comfortable over the R side on take-off and I couldn't get my arms and legs to work together. And so much for the nice height I had going - coach said that I was barely getting off of the ice.

Today's Practice

I got to enjoy my last daytime public today, as I start my new full-time job tomorrow. I'm really excited about the job - I checked out my new office on Monday, and I have a real office! Not just a cubicle, but 4 walls and windows! I get a view of the campus park and if I lean over really far, I can see just a bit of Lake Michigan. However, I'm pretty sad that I'm going to have to give up daytime skating. It was the cheapest and least crowded ice I've ever found. At $150 for an annual pass, it was almost free considering I used about 6-10hrs per week. And, I was often the only one on the ice with the exception of a few recreational adult skaters that I was friendly with. But, I have to do what I have to do - and, right now that is pay my bills.

Anyway, I really enjoyed my skate today. I could really use some more consistency with my jumps, but otherwise, I think that I'm making good progress. Today I almost had the Forward Change Edge Camel. I'm thinking of making my boyfriend video it this weekend - he hates skating and the fact that I skate though, so I doubt I'll be able to convince him to come with for a weekend public. I also did a runthrough of Novice MITF which went well. I still have to learn the BI 3's to FI 3's though. I finished off today's practice with spirals. On the floor, I can do these completely split on the L leg and almost split on the R leg. On the ice, I get stuck at about 1/2 way to split. It's still a nice spiral with my leg well above my head, but it frustrates me that I can't transfer the feeling of the full split to the ice. I think it has something to do with the fact that I'm always holding onto something when I practice spirals on the floor. That little bit of extra leverage must make a big difference. I'll have to keep working on it.
