Whole Lotta Angry
Today was just one of those days where nothing goes right.
First, I was heading to the rink for the 8:10am freestyle when I remembered that my lesson was supposed to be at 7:40am. Luckily, my coach had a lesson after me so she stuck around, and we still had time for a half hour lesson on the 8:10 session. (Love my coach!)
The 8:10am session was crowded, and there were several people there that I don't enjoy skating with because they don't pay much attention to where they're going and what other people are doing. I was trying to run through junior moves since I'm testing in 10 days, but I don't think that I got through one move without having to dodge someone.
After my lesson, I was going to run through my program with the double jumps again. My jumps felt loose and almost sloppy as I warmed up. I managed to land everything the way it was in the program and decided to try it with the music. The boom box was broken, so I had to spend 7 minutes of precious freestyle time adjusting the cord that connects it to the rink's sound system to get my music to play. Then, I went out and landed my first axel flat on my rear end. I was still going to go for the next jump, a double toe, but someone was in my way. Then I was going to go for the next jump, a double sal, but someone was in my way. (I don't know my rink makes us wear the orange vest when we're on program because no one watches out anyway...) I decided to abort the attempted run through since I'd missed 3 of the six jump element and left out most of the footwork. I started over, and someone was in my way for the first axel, so I just did single jumps and made it through, but was still behind the music. Blah, not the way I like to end a session.
If that wasn't bad enough, I was signed up to teach winter walk-on classes today. When I signed up for these classes, I was told that the rink really needed help and that they needed everyone they could get. Well, it turns out that these assignments are only as needed. But, if you're on the list, you have to show up to see if you're needed. Today, I wasn't scheduled to teach the first class again, so I had to sit around for an hour to see if maybe I'd be needed on the second class. Last week, the person in charge of scheduling said that she wasn't putting me on classes because I wasn't high enough on the list. Today, she told me that I was second on the list, but she wanted to use the other people who hadn't been given any classes yet. I am so mad about this whole situation that I almost quit my coaching job on the spot. It's really not fair to expect us to show up and sit around to see if they might need us to teach, and then not pay us anything if they don't need us. Plus, I was not told when I signed up that these classes are as needed. I was told that I would be teaching. And, there is no system for assigning coaches. Some coaches aren't even on the sign up list, but teach every class. Whoever is in the office in the morning arbitrarily assigns coaches. Apparently this is how this has been done for the last nine years that the rink has been open, and there's no changing it. Next time these walk-on classes run, I'm only signing up for the minimum required number.
