Enormous
I had a really great skate today. I did lots of footwork and connecting moves. I felt enormous (no, not fat) - enormous like I could fill the whole arena with my presence. What a great feeling!
There was a small group on the ice today - 3 little boys (barely walking), 2 teenage girls, and 3 moms. They mostly stayed on one end of the rink, and they left around 11am which left me and an empty sheet of ice for the last hour of public!
I didn't quite get to do my intermediate MITF warm-up. I had to abort the backward power 3's because of the group. I did practice the end pattern with just one crossover into it. I did manage to get the rest of the moves in. I feel like this test is passing quality. I'm just fine tuning now - trying to get better extension, turnout, toepoint, and power on each move.
I spent a lot of time just playing today. I tried to remember all of the interesting footwork my coach taught me during past lessons. There's a really fun/challenging 3turn sequence... It's a FI edge, swing to FO edge, double 3turn, cross front, step back to FI edge, repeat in the same direction in a straight line down the ice. I also did some triple 3turns.
Spent time on spirals which I always mean to do, but sometimes neglect. My FOs are ok. I learned a lesson from watching an old tape with Sarah Hughes - I can get my FI spirals to look almost split!
I actually felt like jumping today. I did big, fast, secure singles. My axels were ok. 2sals were landed - although it always takes me a few botched attempts to convince my body that it can do this jump. I even had a few 2toes that were fully rotated! I tried to add a mohawk/inside spread eagle sequence down the ice into my 2toe. It made me take the jump with speed and grace, instead of just crawling into it like I tend to do when it's an isolated element. I had a toe loop epiphany today as well. Once I pick, I have to keep my free foot straight while pulling it back toward the picking foot. I had been turning the free foot as I pulled it back which gave me a big skid instead of an outside edge. Duh! Shouldn't have taken me 8 years to figure that one out :) I did my obligatory work on 2loop and 2flip. Nothing interesting to note there - landed some cheated ones as ususal.
I remembered to work on walleys today. I have to get coach's opinion on these. They felt much improved today, but when I tried to add speed, they fell apart.
I didn't have much time for spins. I did my daily work on back camels. No improvement, maybe even a little bit of regression. I was hitting the toepick which hasn't been a problem before. Hopefully that'll work itself out. I was tired by this time, so that could be a factor as well. I did manage to eek out my camel-catch camel-back sit-catch foot (the one Sarah Hughes used to do with her foot above her head - mine isn't quite as high though).
Can't wait to skate again! Next session will be on Monday as I'm going to Pittsburgh for a mini-vacation this weekend.
